In the aftermath of the war, the U.S. launched Operation Paperclip, secretly bringing over 1,600 German scientists, engineers, and technicians to work for the government. Many had ties to the Nazi regime.
At the same time, Nazi war criminals escaped Europe through “ratlines” secret networks often supported by the Catholic Church. Bishop Alois Hudal, a pro-Nazi Austrian in Rome, helped fugitives like Adolf Eichmann and Josef Mengele by providing travel documents and Vatican-backed Red Cross passports, allowing them to flee to countries in South America. Many of these Nazis happened to earn honorary titles within the Knights of Malta. Incidentally, in 1933, the Vatican signed the Reichskonkordat with Nazi Germany, which protected Catholic institutions but also gave Hitler international legitimacy. The Vatican largely stayed silent on Nazi crimes during the war.
