Lee Hyung-il, candidate for Deputy PM and Finance Minister, stated in National Assembly documents that virtual asset taxation standards will be issued via a National Tax Service notice by year-end.
He argued that taxing virtual assets improves equity given existing capital gains and transaction taxes on stocks, and that classifying them as miscellaneous income allows for favorable taxpayer treatment, including comprehensive taxation and reduced compliance costs.
Meanwhile, a National Assembly petition to defer virtual asset taxation by two years has surpassed 50,000 signatures and is set for referral to a standing committee.
