St Monica reminds us that sometimes, the most powerful thing we can do for someone who has drifted from the faith is to keep praying for them. She tried to speak to Augustine about God, but he often brushed her aside. Still, she never stopped praying. For more than fifteen years, she entrusted her son to God. As St Ambrose encouraged her, she learned to “speak less to Augustine about God and more to God about Augustine.”
Her story reminds us that discipleship is more than following rules. Sometimes, it means being the face of Christ to someone who has lost their way, loving them patiently and praying for their conversion. Perhaps God is calling you to be a St Monica to someone in your life. You may not see the fruits of your prayers immediately, but keep trusting, loving and praying. God is always at work, even when we cannot see it. 🙏
