In Italy, there was a plan to prohibit drivers over 85 years old from driving on highways — but at the last moment, they changed their minds.
The draft of the new rules also proposed to limit trips to a radius of 100 km from home and to introduce a complete zero alcohol policy for elderly drivers. However, these restrictions could be lifted after a additional medical examination.
As a result, the government abandoned the strict prohibitions, but checks for drivers aged 85 and over will still be intensified. Among the options are stricter medical examinations and a practical test when renewing licenses.
