Freedom From Excess

The Buddha taught that freedom is found by avoiding the extremes of indulgence and self-torment (SN 56.11). In the Sabbasava Sutta (MN 2), he instructs to use the four requisites with wise reflection: regarding food, one reflects, “Not for fun, not for intoxication, not for beautification, but only for sustaining this body, ending old discomfort and not arousing new.” In the same way with robes, lodging, and medicines. This clear purpose weakens craving and the taints, making the mind light and unentangled. When we relate to what we use as tools rather than as objects of self-adornment, the senses grow calm, contentment arises, and the path becomes workable: virtue is protected, mindfulness sharp, and the heart free from excess.
