Learning From Mistakes

The Buddha taught that learning rests on examining one’s actions. In the Advice to Rahula, he says: reflect before, during, and after you act. If you see that an action rooted in intention leads to affliction for yourself or others, abandon it. If, after acting, you see that harm was done, acknowledge the fault, confess it to a teacher or a wise friend, and undertake restraint for the future. When an action is blameless and conducive to welfare, continue and cultivate it. In this way, mistakes become conditions for wisdom, not despair: they reveal unwholesome intentions and show what to abandon. This is how one trains in the Buddha’s path.
