The Philosophy of Dua al-Tawassul: Between Tawhid and the Misconception of Shirk
Every Wednesday night, Shi'a Muslims recite Dua al-Tawassul, invoking Prophet Mohammad and the Ahl al-Bayt as means of approaching God.
Critics sometimes portray this practice as worshipping intermediaries or attributing divine powers to human beings.
This accusation, however, rests on a fundamental misunderstanding of Islamic monotheism.
Shi'a theology is unequivocal: Allah alone is the Creator, the Sustainer, the ultimate Source of guidance, and the One who possesses independent power.
The Qur'an declares, “You alone we worship, and You alone we ask for help” (1:5), and “There is no power except through Allah” (18:39).
Tawassul does not contradict these principles; rather, it expresses dependence upon God through those whom God has honoured.
When the believer says, “O Muhammad, O Ali… intercede for us with Allah,” the meaning is not that the Imam possesses an independent divine power.
Rather, the believer asks God through His chosen servants, recognising their closeness to Him and their role as guides and intercessors by His permission.
The Qur'an itself teaches believers to seek a means of approach to God: “Seek the means of approach to Him” (5:35).
The prophets and Imams are therefore not rivals to God, nor autonomous sources of salvation.
They are servants of God—the highest expressions of human servitude, obedience and spiritual perfection.
Indeed, the philosophy of Dua al-Tawassul is profoundly educational.
It teaches the believer to love righteousness through concrete human examples, to recognise spiritual excellence, and to approach God with humility rather than arrogance.
The real question is not whether a believer says “through Muhammad” or “through Ali,” but whether his heart ultimately sees independent power in anyone besides Allah.
Tawassul affirms precisely the opposite: every grace, every victory, every guidance and every power ultimately comes from Him.
