Because the tone, vocabulary, and sentence patterns are academic — exactly like in the test. 2. Skim for the Big Picture (1–2 minutes) Don’t read every word. Glance through the title, introduction, and topic sentences. Ask yourself: • What’s the topic? • What’s the writer’s main idea? This builds your “Main Idea Readar” — a key Band 9 skill. 3. Scan for Details Now, train your eyes to catch names, dates, numbers, and capitalized words fast. IELTS questions love these. You’re building scanning reflexes, not just understanding. 4. Keyword & Paraphrase Training Pick one short paragraph. Underline key words. Then highlight how the writer paraphrases them: • “increase” → “rise / surge / grow” • “problem” → “issue / challenge / obstacle” This is what IELTS questions test most — spotting paraphrase traps. 5. Mini Summary Practice After reading the article, write a 1–2 sentence summary in your own words. This improves your ability to compress ideas — perfect for Matching Headings and Summary Completion tasks. 6.
