📌 SC Upholds ECI’s Power for Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of Electoral Rolls
🔹The Supreme Court has upheld the constitutional validity of the Election Commission of India’s (ECI) Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls. The Court ruled that the exercise strengthens the principle of free and fair elections, which is part of the Constitution’s basic structure.
🔹 The Court held that the ECI derives powers for SIR from:
1. Article 324 of the Constitution
2. Representation of the People Act, 1950
3. Relevant electoral rules and procedures.
🔹 The Bench observed that accurate and credible electoral rolls are the foundation of democracy and justified SIR due to:
1. Large-scale migration & urbanisation
2. Possible duplication/inaccuracies in voter lists
3. Long gap since intensive revision.
🔹 The Court also clarified that while ECI can verify electoral eligibility, it is not the final authority on citizenship determination.
