The consequences of World War I proved distressing for the German Jesuits in India, forcing over 60 to leave the country. This deeply affected Archbishop Jurgens, who died on September 28, 1916. From 1916–1919, there was a severe shortage of personnel until Archbishop Alban Goodier S.J. was appointed. Another long vacancy was in 1936, when the See of Bombay remained vacant for a year following the death of Archbishop Joaquim Lima S.J.
