The first six Archbishops of Bombay were Jesuits, until Valerian Cardinal Gracias was appointed to the office on December 4, 1950. The Franciscans were the first missionaries to arrive in India in 1500, followed by the Jesuits with Francis Xavier who arrived in Goa on May 6, 1542.
