Attempts to remove the Awami League from Bangladesh’s political landscape are not new.
In an interview with the Sunday Guardian, Awami League's President Sheikh Hasina recalls the party’s history of being banned and targeted, before making a direct assertion about its roots:
“The Awami League was not created through state power or military patronage. It was created by the people.”
Political suppression cannot simply erase a party whose roots she says lie in the people of Bangladesh.
