An Indian startup called Alteon is working on a radically different fixed-wing drone designed for extremely long-endurance flight.
The approximately 3-metre wingspan aircraft uses a technique called dynamic soaring — similar to the way albatrosses exploit differences in wind speed to gain energy while flying.
The first major application is persistent maritime surveillance.
Alteon has reportedly already conducted autonomous flight testing over the Bay of Bengal, completing seven cycles at speeds of more than 100 km/h, at around one metre above the water.
The next major goal is even more ambitious:
🔹 Fully energy-neutral flight
🔹 Motor switched off during portions of flight
🔹 Propellers potentially operating as turbines
🔹 Recharging batteries while airborne
🔹 Extremely long-duration maritime surveillance
If the technology achieves its intended performance, such aircraft could potentially remain over maritime areas for months without landing, dramatically reducing the need for conventional refuelling or frequent recovery.
Alteon has reportedly raised $2.5 million to develop the technology further.
But there is an important distinction: a one-year endurance target is a development goal, not a demonstrated operational capability yet. The key challenge will be proving sustained energy-neutral flight in real-world weather and maritime conditions.
If successful, this could open a completely new category of persistent, low-energy UAVs for ocean surveillance.
