"Who will rise for Gaza?” the editors ask in the editors' note. “It is the question that headlines our issue, the spirit of the times, the only question worth asking in our schools and streets.”
Across 12 pages writers, organizers, artists and poets in Palestine, Lebanon, and beyond reflect on the two years since the start of the escalated genocide in Gaza: the unconscionable loss and devastation, our martyrs, and the sacrifices we must make.
Alaa Alqaisi writes about her evacuation from Gaza, Abubaker Abed challenges the distinction between resistance fighters and journalists, Zarifa Hassan writes about the painful logistics of displacement, and Fatima Joumaa reflects on one year since the war on Lebanon.
WAWOG writes about expanding the boycott of the New York Times. In Italy, a worker on strike promises that “not a single nail will leave from our ports, airports, and rail stations.” Palestine Action takes to the issue's pages to address their proscription and to emphasize the importance of supporting our prisoners without condition.
But the most harrowing piece in the issue is at its heart. The center spread contains the words of eight journalists remembering their martyred colleagues. “Their words reach us from all corners of the Strip: daughter of Jabalia mourns Anas al-Sharif; a son of Shuja’iyya mourns Mohammed Qreiqeh; a wife, the husband she lost two weeks into the genocide; a cousin, a cousin.” These eight are a fraction of the more than fifty testimonies we have collected and will be sharing on the NYWC website in the weeks to come.
It is unfathomable that we now write about two years of genocide. God willing next year we will write about Palestine’s victory and Zionism’s defeat. As the editors end, “In effect, it is the challenge to culture, of culture: to meet obscenity with steel, cowardice with commitment, death with life — to make the image an act, to make the word a will.”
