🔆 India–Belgium: Expanding Strategic Partnership

📍 Why in News?
🟢 India and Belgium held their first Strategic Dialogue, reflecting the rapid expansion of bilateral ties beyond traditional trade into strategic, technological, maritime, defence and green-energy cooperation.

📍 Strategic & Diplomatic Cooperation
🟢 Strategic Dialogue: A regular mechanism to deepen cooperation in trade, investment, technology, green transition, connectivity, defence and security.
🟢 UNSC Reform: Belgium reaffirmed support for India’s permanent membership of a reformed UN Security Council.
🟢 The partnership increasingly complements the broader India–EU Strategic Partnership and India–EU Comprehensive Strategic Agenda 2030.

📍 Trade, Investment & Technology
🟢 India and Belgium aim to double bilateral trade within five years.
🟢 Priority sectors include semiconductors, pharmaceuticals, defence industries, advanced materials, critical minerals, sustainable industries and nuclear energy.
🟢 The historic diamond trade linking Antwerp with Mumbai and Surat remains an important pillar.
🟢 An India–Belgium Investment Fast-Track Mechanism will help address investment bottlenecks, while cooperation between Belgium’s SFPIM and India’s NIIF can support investment flows.

📍 Defence, Security & Maritime Cooperation
🟢 The two sides agreed to deepen cooperation on counter-terrorism, maritime security, defence technology, cyber and hybrid threats.
🟢 Cooperation may be strengthened through a Joint Working Group on Counter-Terrorism.

🟢 The two sides are also expanding collaboration in AI, startups, innovation and digital skills.
🟢 Cooperation between MeitY Startup Hub and Hub Brussels will support innovation-driven entrepreneurship.

📍 Mobility, Education & People-to-People Ties
🟢 Focus on smoother visa processing and enhanced mobility of skilled professionals, students, researchers and business travellers.
🟢 Cooperation is being expanded in healthcare, nursing, education, skilling, TVET and apprenticeships.
🟢 The partnership also seeks stronger recognition of qualifications and future-skill development.

🟢 The Belgo-Indian Network for Astronomy and Astrophysics (BINA) is an important platform for scientific cooperation.
🟢 Belgian institutions are linked with Indian astronomical facilities, including the Devasthal Optical Telescope and Devasthal International Liquid Mirror Telescope.
