While not all votes in Saxony Anhalt have been counted yet it appears the BSW, a populist party, has crossed the 5% hurdle, with their vote share currently netting in 4 seats
While as of now it would decrease the AFD's seat share to 39 seats and thus 3 short of the majority it could be a blessing in disguise.
Despite as recently as two days ago stating they would only govern if they got a solo majority tonight the AFD has seemingly reversed course and is looking for a way to govern without a solo majority
So either they form a coalition with another party or
A minority government "tolerated" by another party, namely the BSW
In the electoral context of a multiparty democracy's minority government the TLDR meaning of "tolerating" means that while the other party wouldn't join a coalition they would back the minority up on certain votes
Sarah Wagenknecht who founded and is still de-facto but not de-jure leader of the BSW is a massive opportunist, soulless entity, Russian cocksucker and also just a liar.
That same Wagenknecht has over the last couple weeks hinted at something like this with her TLDR saying the BSW wouldn't join a coalition with the AFD but would also not be opposed to working with the AFD on a case by case basis
We still have to wait a bit for every vote to be counted but right now this looks to be the AFD's most likely way into power
