King Harald V became the first Norwegian monarch born in Norway in 567 years. He was succeeding his father on January 17, 1991. The previous one being Olav Håkonsson, who became king in 1380.
Under the constitution in 1991, the King held supreme command of the Norwegian Armed Forces. He holds the military rank of four-star general in the Air Force, and admiral in the Navy.
King Harald V distinguished himself in numerous national and international sailing competitions. As Crown Prince, he represented Norway at the Olympic Games three times: in 1964, 1968 and 1972. His best Olympic result was an 8th-place finish in the 5.5 meter class. When he was Crown Price, he also carried the Norwegian flag at the opening of the Olympic Games in Tokyo in 1964.
