Dear MISA members,
The past days have been incredibly difficult for many in our community. Many of us have family, friends, and loved ones directly affected by the current situation in Iran, and we recognize that this moment carries a heavy emotional and personal toll.
We understand and feel the frustration regarding the limited acknowledgement and support that has been communicated by the university so far. As an association, we want you to know that we have been actively in contact with the university administration and student services to advocate for stronger recognition of the situation and clearer academic support for Iranian students.
Specifically, we have raised concerns regarding the need for meaningful and direct acknowledgement of the current events and its effect on the Iranian community, and have asked the university to ensure that students affected by the situation are given appropriate academic flexibility, including accommodations such as extensions, deferred exams, and other forms of support when needed. These conversations are ongoing, and we continue to push for more concrete measures and clearer communication.
We have also communicated to the university that acknowledgement of the situation should be shared with the entire campus community. Recognition of the current events should not be limited to a small or privately-targeted group (as has been the case); it should be communicated publicly so that both Iranian and non-Iranian members of the McGill community are aware of the situation.
In the meantime, if you are currently struggling academically or personally due to the situation, support services and case managers are available through the Office of the Dean of Students and the Wellness Hub, and they can help you access academic accommodations or mental health resources.
We will keep the community informed as soon as we receive updates.
