🇩🇪 Far-right AfD wins historic 44.5% in German Saxony-Anhalt election
"Alternative for Germany" more than doubles its result compared to the 2021 elections, when it received 20.8%. According to Reuters, this is the best result for the AfD in state elections in the party's entire history.
Chancellor Friedrich Merz's Christian Democratic Union, which had governed the state since 2002, receives only 18.5% compared to 37.1% five years ago. Following them are The Left — 9.4%, the Greens — 8.9%, and the SPD — 8.2%. "Sahra Wagenknecht's Alliance" with 5% is currently balancing on the threshold of entering parliament.
Meanwhile, the AfD currently lacks the mandates to form a government on its own. Other parties that are guaranteed to enter the state parliament refuse a coalition with it. If the final distribution of mandates does not change the situation, the AfD may win the elections but remain without power.
For Ukraine, the result is particularly indicative: the AfD advocates for the cessation of German support for Ukraine, the lifting of sanctions against the Russian Federation, and the restoration of economic and political ties with Moscow. The party's state program also proposes seeking the cancellation of refugee status for Ukrainians and preparing their return to Ukraine.
The AfD's stronghold in Saxony-Anhalt has been classified as right-extremist by German counter-intelligence since 2023. If the party manages to form a government on its own, it will be the first case in the history of the Federal Republic of Germany where a federal state is governed by a political force with such a status.
