MoE Imposes Asset Freeze on 9 Universities Transitioning to Autonomy, Including Jimma University
The Ministry of Education (MoE) has imposed an asset freeze on nine public universities, including Jimma University, that are in the final phase of transitioning to full self-administration (autonomy).
📍 Key Details of the Decision:
The decision, signed by Minister Birhanu Nega, prohibits these universities from:
🔸 Selling assets
🔸 Borrowing against their assets
🔸 Entering into large construction and procurement contracts
This measure is a precautionary step until the new competitive leadership is fully confirmed.
Leadership Changes:
▫️ Interim presidents (ጊዜያዊ ፕሬዝዳንቶች) have been appointed at Jimma, Gondar, and AASTU, with permanent leaders to be selected through a competitive process.
Path to Full Autonomy:
▫️ Jimma, Gondar, Bahir Dar, Mekele, Hawasa, Haramaya, Arba Minch, ASTU and AASTU.
These nine Universities scored 60% or more on autonomy readiness criteria and are expected to gain full independence within the next three months.
