🇳🇬 NEW NIGERIAN TAX LAW STARTS 2026 (A Long Read)
What YOU need to know as an average Nigerian:
From January 2026, Nigeria is changing how taxes work. This is not rumor. It is law.
Here is everything you need to know, no big grammar.
1️⃣ First Thing First: Tax Is Now PROGRESSIVE
What does that mean?
👉 You are NOT taxed all at once
👉 You are taxed small-small, based on income levels
Just like salary grading.
2️⃣ If You Earn ₦800000 or Less in a Year, you pay ZERO tax.
No story. No calculation. No deduction. This applies to:
Salary earners
Freelancers
Side hustlers
Self-employed people
As long as your total personal income for the year is ₦800k or below.
3️⃣ If You Earn Above ₦800,000 (Personal Income), here are the tax brackets 👇
(Remember: it’s progressive, not flat)
₦0 – ₦800,000 → 0% (no tax)
₦800,001 – ₦3,000,000 → 15%
₦3,000,001 – ₦12,000,000 → 18%
₦12,000,001 – ₦25,000,000 → 21%
₦25,000,001 – ₦50,000,000 → 23%
Above ₦50,000,000 → 25%
⚠️ NOTE:
You do NOT pay one percentage on everything.
4️⃣ Example (Very Important – Read This)
Let’s say you earn ₦10 million in a year.
❌ You will NOT pay 18% of ₦10m
✅ This is how it works:
First ₦800k → No tax
₦800k – ₦3m → taxed at 15%
Remaining amount (above ₦3m) → taxed at 18%
So tax is deducted layer by layer, not once.
🔁 Alternative: If You Don’t Want to Calculate It Yourself
If manual calculation looks confusing, you don’t have to do it yourself.
There is an official government tax calculator you can use.
What this site does:
You enter your annual income
It automatically:
Removes the ₦800,000 tax-free amount
Applies the progressive tax brackets
Calculates everything correctly
It then shows you how much tax you are expected to pay. There is also an option to include reliefs in the calculation 🔥
5️⃣ Reliefs: Not All Your Money Is Taxed
Government allows you to remove some things first before tax is calculated.
These are called RELIEFS 👇
You can remove:
Pension contributions
NHF (National Housing Fund)
Health insurance (NHIS)
Rent relief
You can remove 20% of your rent but it is capped at ₦500,000
👉 Tax is calculated on what remains, not your full income.
6️⃣ Students, NYSC, Unemployed
If:
You are a student
You are unemployed
You are not earning up to ₦800k yearly
👉 You are not taxed
But once income becomes consistent and traceable, tax applies.
7️⃣ Freelancers & Online Earners
If you:
Receive money from clients
Earn online
Get paid into bank accounts regularly
👉 That is personal income
Once it passes ₦800k yearly, tax applies.
8️⃣ Small Business Owners (Very Important)
If you run a business:
✅ SMALL BUSINESS
Yearly turnover ₦100 million or below OR
Total business assets below ₦250 million
👉 NO company income tax
❌ BIG BUSINESS
Turnover above ₦100 million yearly
👉 You pay 30% company income tax
9️⃣ Very Important Advice for Business Owners
If you run a business but it’s not registered:
⚠️ Government will treat all the money as your personally income
What you should do:
Register your business as a separate entity. Message @jesseking1 to register your business.
Pay yourself a salary from the business.
This protects you from higher personal income tax.
🔟 How Will Government Track People?
Simple:
TIN (Tax Identification Number) will be compulsory
Banks and financial platforms will report transactions
Consistent income = traceable income
How to Get Your TIN Yourself. You can get your Tax Identification Number (TIN) by yourself online.
👉 Go to: https://jtb.gov.ng
On the site:
Follow the prompts to fill in your details and then submit to get your TIN. The process is straightforward and does not take long
Or You Can Let Me Help You if you don’t want stress or mistakes:
I charge a very small fee. Just send me a message @jesseking1 and I’ll handle it.
FINAL WORD
From 2026:
If you earn → tax applies
If you earn small → you are protected
If you earn more → tax increases gradually
If you hide business income → you’ll pay more
📌 Preparation is wisdom
