The Cult Psychological Horror Game “Sanitarium” Will Return to PC and Consoles After 28 Years — First Trailer and Details on Sanitarium Enhanced
Publisher Ziggurat Interactive announced Sanitarium Enhanced, an updated version for modern platforms of the cult psychological horror game Sanitarium (“Shizarium”) from American studio DreamForge Intertainment.
Compared with the original game, Sanitarium Enhanced will offer controller support, gameplay improvements, previously unpublished bonus materials, and fixes for old bugs.
The game will support the 16:9 aspect ratio during gameplay, feature an optional hint system to help locate interactive objects, include optimizations for Steam Deck, and allow players to increase the character’s movement speed.
In Sanitarium’s story, the protagonist Max ends up in a psychiatric hospital after surviving a car accident, with no memory of what happened or of his own identity.
Players will visit five surreal worlds populated by insane and half-dead characters and discover what Max’s tormented mind is hiding beneath the cover of a psychedelic dream.

It has been announced that Sanitarium Enhanced will be released by the end of 2026 on PC (Steam, GOG, Epic Games Store), PS4, PS5, Xbox Series X and S, and Nintendo Switch. The announcement was accompanied by an unsettling gameplay trailer.
The original Sanitarium debuted on PC in April 1998, received high marks from critics, and became a commercial success, with the game selling more than 300,000 copies. After 28 years, the classic version is available on Steam, GOG, and EGS.
