I think the people talking about business deals with the Russians are behaving foolishly.

Putin has imposed his view of the world on them. I wish they would take a step back and understand reality.

They’re hoping — you know, I’d like to drive a Maserati, but I don’t, and probably never will. And he tells them, "We’ll give you a Maserati." And they believe him.

I think some of these negotiators are behaving foolishly. They really don’t understand who they’re dealing with, and they don’t understand the Ukrainians.

We know that the Russians did not want to see me on that negotiating team. And it’s unfortunate that they were listened to.

They should have been told: "You don’t choose our negotiator. We choose him."

I think what happened was that they allowed Putin to influence this, and then they started using his friends.

I would have liked to remain the representative for both Ukraine and Russia, but that didn’t happen. So I said: this is the president’s decision. He is the president. He makes those decisions, not me.

The overwhelming majority of Americans support Ukraine and believe in Ukraine. But I’ll tell you, if you conduct a poll in America, you will automatically get 30% of people who believe the sun rises in the west or the southeast. I simply don’t count them.

So you’re never going to get 100%. But the fact is that 68 to 70% of Americans support Ukraine, and only 2% really support what Russia is doing. That shows that the American people are with Ukraine.

Don’t listen to Washington. Washington has its own view. That’s why they call it the swamp.

But Americans in general admire Ukraine’s fight, understand it, and support Ukraine.

Witkoff and Kushner cannot understand war — the full complexity of war, the human factor, the factor of your adversary.

I don’t think they understand Russia and its capabilities very well. They’re not trained for this. It’s not their core competency.

I think their involvement in the negotiations is a mistake. Not because they’re bad people — no, they’re good people — but because they don’t understand it.
