The Sound That No Longer Exists on Earth 🌿🔊
Listen closely to a sound lost to history. This haunting recording captures the last known male Kauai ʻōʻō (Moho braccatus) singing in the forests of Hawaii in 1987.
In ʻōʻō courtship, males and females sing in harmonized duets. Because he was the last surviving member of his entire species, his call pauses where a female would normally sing back—a response that never came.
Declared officially extinct, the voice of the Kauai ʻōʻō lives on only through rare audio archives like this one.
