NEW COURSE ANNOUNCEMENT
ʿIlm al-Waḍʿ
Khulāṣat al-Waḍʿ
ʿIlm al-Waḍʿ is a subtle but important discipline concerned with how words are assigned to meanings and how those relationships are understood. Its principles assist the student in developing greater precision when studying the Arabic language and other Islamic sciences in which the implications and usage of words are essential.
Although rarely studied today as an independent discipline, ʿIlm al-Waḍʿ formed part of the traditional scholarly curriculum, particularly alongside the Arabic and rational sciences. Through this course, we hope to contribute towards reviving and preserving this classical science.
We will study Khulāṣat al-Waḍʿ, working carefully through its terminology, divisions and principles, with explanation and examples to help students develop a clear understanding of the science.
What Will Students Gain From This Course?
By the end of the course students will:
- Develop a clear foundation in ʿIlm al-Waḍʿ and understand its purpose as a distinct Islamic science.
- Understand the relationship between words, meanings, and the manner in which words are assigned to those meanings.
- Become familiar with the key terminology, classifications and principles used by scholars of this discipline.
- Learn to identify and apply the different categories of waḍʿ through practical examples.
- Build a foundation that will assist with further study of disciplines such as Balāghah, Manṭiq, Uṣūl al-Fiqh and the Arabic sciences.
Minimum Prerequisites
- Completed a basic introductory text in Manṭiq.
- Studied a beginner-level text in Naḥw and Ṣarf.
The aim is not simply to complete the text, but for students to leave with a working understanding of the science and the ability to recognise its principles when they encounter them elsewhere.
