Important for Mains 2026: 1. Bouncer Questions (10M) If you encounter a weird/unfamiliar question and have no clear idea what to write, don’t panic or waste excessive time on it. First, map the remaining questions to the syllabus and identify the units/topics that have not been asked in the paper. Then make an intelligent inference about which part of the syllabus the bouncer may be targeting and write whatever relevant knowledge you can recall from that syllabus topic. Attempt strategically rather than leaving it blank. 2. If One Paper Is Difficult, Don’t Fumble If one paper feels unusually difficult, stay composed and don’t let it affect your performance. UPSC has often produced a relative variation in difficulty across the two papers of an optional—one may be significantly tougher while the other is comparatively manageable. A difficult paper is difficult for everyone. Maintain clarity of thought even if you cant give a ton of thinkers and don’t give in until your second paper is over.
