Basically, you are pretty much your own boss after your probation . Hence , the best part ,the only part ? I do not know. So if you manage to clear this infamous exam in your early 20s , well expect to be the head of the district before your 30s . Coming back to the state PCS exam , theoretically it is much easier to get through in terms of competition. So it is a nice back up plan if UPSC does not work out. Local lobbies are always powerful. Some state PCS lobbies are immensely powerful inn fact , so powerful that IAS cadre posts are held by state PCS officers in some states( Nagaland cough cough !). In bureaucracy , it is a fine practice to be on good terms with everyone . But isn’t that true in life as well ? I am not taking sides here. North-east cadres have historically had powerful State CIvil Servant lobbies. All civil services , entail working with politicians . Politics is not inherently bad. We are in a democracy , after all .
