In these letters, REH comes off as likable and well-grounded. He suggests the health benefits of chopping wood, playing football, and boxing. Lovecraft, pale and mostly housebound in Providence Rhode Island, seethes that the mind is always more important than the flesh.
Both men believed that some kind of civilizational collapse was coming. To Lovecraft, this was bad news. He thought that man achieved his highest potential with all the benefits of urbanization. REH welcomed the coming age of heroes."
