there are two types of spray paint:
general purpose paint from hardware store
cheap, smelly, unpredictable, gets the work done but cannot be reliably mixed and layered (layers might start to dissolve each other, making a cracked pattern). impossible to control precisely, because it's highly pressurized. avoid, unless you want to paint your rusty bench or a piece of welded metal with a single plain color.
semi-professional paint for artists (flame, montana, mtn, molotow, ironlak, kobra)
low pressure (important), high color quality, fine control, custom cap availability, mixes perfectly, layers perfectly. may be x2 more expensive, but i recommend it. if you are planning to do artistic work, stick to professional paint. it is worth it & looks gorgeous, and is easier to work with. buy different caps: thin, medium, vertical, fat. try them all.
