Women actually worried these responsibilities would take them out of the home and away from their kids so they didn’t want the right to vote because it meant mandatory enrollment in these duties
The right to vote used to come with
- Military service / the draft / bearing arms
- Jury duty
- Militia service
- Firefighter service, “bucket duty”
- Physical enforcement of the law, like helping the police with enforcement
