Kazuyo Sejima and her studio SANAA designed a minimalist residential building in Okurayama, Japan, near the station. The building consists of nine residential units, each approximately 50 square meters.
Instead of maximizing the number of units on the site, the architects focused on creating spaces and an atmosphere that people could enjoy living in and spending time. They conceived the building as bright, layered stacked housing with an enjoyable garden.
The plan includes gardens cut through the linear plan, making it a continuous strip. By cutting this strip plan randomly, some spaces become internal, and some become external terraces. The architects aimed to create conditions where internal and external spaces interact organically and continuously.
From windows opening in various directions, residents can enjoy different views: gardens with a secluded atmosphere, gently curved exterior walls, or cityscapes. Each living space is gathered around open spaces; one may have a large room surrounded by a garden on the first floor and a small bedroom on the upper floor, another may have a three-bay room and an external terrace on the second floor, and a third may have a large terrace on the third floor. Overall, the project aims to create pleasant and comfortable living spaces where different zones can combine with various lifestyles.
