THE PROMISE HIDDEN IN THE CONSTITUTION
There is a short section of the U.S. Constitution that rarely gets the same attention as the Bill of Rights — Article VI.
Its importance is easy to miss.
The Constitution requires federal and state lawmakers, judges and executive officers to be bound by an oath or affirmation to support the Constitution.
That means the constitutional system was built around something larger than any single office or individual: the rules themselves.
Article VI also establishes the Constitution, valid federal laws and treaties as the “supreme Law of the Land,” binding judges in every state.
More than two centuries later, that principle remains part of the basic structure of American government.
Sometimes one of the Constitution’s strongest ideas is found in one of its shortest passages.
