🔆 As Hyacinth Chokes Vembanad, Robots Come to the Rescue of Kumarakom
📍 Why in News?
🟢 The spread of water hyacinth across Vembanad Lake is overwhelming Kumarakom, affecting tourism, inland navigation, fishing and public transport.
📍 Robotic Pilot Project
🟢 From September 10, Kumarakom will host a one-month pilot project to deploy a robotic system for harvesting water hyacinth from the lake.
🟢 The project will also explore ways of processing the harvested weed into value-added products.
🟢 The pilot is being launched by the State Wetland Authority Kerala, in association with stakeholders, including the Chamber of Vembanad Hotels and Resorts.
🟢 The Centre for Water Resources Development and Management (CWRDM) will lead the project, while Foundation for Environmental Research and Innovation (FERI), Kochi, will be the implementing agency.
🟢 An unmanned surface vehicle equipped with a robotic mechanism will be deployed to collect water hyacinth through local channels.
📍 Impact of the Infestation
🟢 The invasive weed is affecting tourism, inland navigation and fishing livelihoods.
🟢 It is disrupting public transport by damaging boat propellers, leading to the cancellation of several daily services between Muhamma and Kumarakom.
🟢 The impact extends to the movement of agricultural produce from north Kuttanad, drinking-water supplies and the livelihoods of communities dependent on the lake.

🟢 The initiative focuses not merely on removing water hyacinth, but also on exploring its conversion into marketable, value-added products.
🟢 As the weed continues to spread, a more effective and sustained intervention is needed to protect the ecological and economic significance of Vembanad Lake.
