If Client says, “I can’t afford it.
Don’t reduce your price.
Don’t say “okay.”
Do this instead.
Most business owners hear “I can’t afford it” and immediately think, “They don’t have the money.
But that isn’t always what the client is really saying.
Sometimes the real message is:
“I don’t understand why this is worth that amount yet.”
Your client’s brain is constantly comparing the money leaving their pocket with the value they believe they’ll receive.
If they see ₦100,000 leaving and only see “a service,” ₦100,000 feels expensive.
But when they clearly understand what that ₦100,000 will help them achieve, avoid, save, improve, or gain, the amount starts to feel different.
That’s the psychology.
So when someone says, “I can’t afford it,” don’t immediately defend your price.
Don’t say “Okay.”
Don’t rush to offer a discount.
Instead, calmly ask:
“I understand. Before we decide that it’s outside your budget, can I ask what part of the investment feels difficult for you right now?”
Now you’ve opened the real conversation.
Maybe they genuinely don’t have the money.
Maybe they expected something cheaper.
Maybe they don’t understand what they’re getting.
Maybe they’re comparing you with another option.
You can’t solve the right problem if you never discover the real problem.
Here’s a simple example:
A business owner offered a service for ₦80,000.
The client said, “I can’t afford it.”
Instead of dropping the price to ₦50,000, the business owner asked:
“I understand. Is it the total amount that’s difficult, or are you unsure whether the result will justify the investment?
The client replied:
“Honestly, I’m not sure what exactly I’m paying for.
That changed everything.
The business owner explained what was included, what problem the service would solve, how the process worked, and what the client could expect.
The client eventually said:
“Oh, I understand now. I thought it was just the basic service.”
The price didn’t change.
The client’s understanding changed.
And that’s the lesson:
Sometimes you don’t have a price problem. You have a value communication problem.
This applies whether you run a salon, restaurant, agency, consulting business, real estate business, fashion brand, service business, online business, or anything else.
If you want to understand the psychology behind situations like this and know exactly what to say when clients hesitate, this group was created for you.
People are already getting the tools, and the price won’t stay the same forever.
Come get your tools to package and position your offer before you’re forced to learn these lessons the hard way.
Save this. You’ll need it.
