🌺 The word of St. Luke (Voino-Yasenetsky) (1877-1961) on the day of the Transfiguration of the Lord about the spiritual light

On this great day, we remember the glorious Transfiguration of our Lord and God Jesus Christ, when He revealed to us the Divine light of His Face, of His entire Nature.

We must delve into what spiritual light is. My speech will be about spiritual light.

You all know how every living thing reverently reaches out to the sun, to the sunlight shining from the sky, to material light. You know how every bug, every blade of grass, every leaf and flower always reaches out to the light. You all know the sunlight, the material light, and you all love it.

But do you all know that, beyond the light of the sun, there is another great light, an immaterial light, a spiritual light? Do you all reach out to this spiritual light?

Oh, how hard it is for me to say: no, not all, far, far from all. I'll even say more: very few are drawn to it, and the rest of the multitude living on earth don't need spiritual light, don't want to know anything about it. They need only material light: they need the benefits that come with that light.

I'll say more: I'll make a disclaimer about what I said earlier, that all living things are drawn to sunlight. No, no, I didn't misspeak: there are many birds, animals, and nocturnal insects that seek darkness and avoid sunlight; there are toads and worms, and there are underground fish that don't perceive light.

There are many like them, those unfortunate people who need darkness, not light, for you know that all thieves and robbers, all fornicators and adulterers seek darkness, committing their dark deeds in the darkness, in the darkness of night. Light bothers them, they find light unbearable, they don't like it.

And if they do not even love material light, then spiritual light, the light that shone upon the world from the Lord Jesus Christ, is even more unbearable for them.

Well, even if they cannot bear it, nevertheless, that Divine light which Christ revealed to us on Mount Tabor still shines and will never cease to shine.

Often leaden clouds obscure the sun. There are people who cover their eyes from the sun, and there are also blind people who are unable to see the light.

The Apostle and Evangelist John the Theologian spoke of those who cannot bear the light of the Spirit in his wondrous Gospel, speaking of our Lord Jesus Christ as the Light that came to earth:

"There was the true Light, which enlightens every man who comes into the world—it enlightens everyone, and would like to save everyone. It was in the world, and the world was made through it, and the world did not know it.

He came to His own, and His own did not receive Him."

Oh, what terrible words - His own did not accept Him.

“But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, even to those who believe in His name” ( John 1:9-12 ).

And this Light shines and will shine forever, no matter how much we turn away from It, no matter how unnecessary this light may seem to the world.

But in the eyes of the world this light fades, fades more and more: it shines in the heavens, but in human souls it fades, like sunlight obscured by heavy clouds.

Don’t you remember how the light of Christ faded, what a terrible, bloody darkness settled over the world so recently, when our German enemies committed their indescribable atrocities?

Don't you know the bloody darkness, the impenetrable gloom in the hearts of those American soldiers, those pilots who exterminate the innocent population of Korea? Darkness, bloody, impenetrable darkness...

And the darkness thickens more and more, and we are afraid, afraid, when we see that this darkness reigns in the hearts of many people.

They appear to be quite prosperous; they have everything: strength, vigor, beauty, an abundance of the fruits of the earth, and beautiful clothing—they have it all. They seem alive, but only seem so, for the darkness of their hearts is spiritual death. The words of the Apocalypse can ...
