Public directories still put the United States far ahead of China on raw site count: Statista’s mid-2026 tally listed ~4,423 U.S. data centers, the most in the world, while China typically appears in the mid-hundreds on the same maps (on the order of ten times fewer listed sites, even more per person given China’s larger population).
Tracked AI campus capacity in open Western indexes also shows the U.S. with the bulk of announced gigawatts. Site catalogs miss some Chinese state and military halls, and chip supply is a separate contest, but the “race with China” line is clearly used to "hurry local approvals, grid hookups, and public subsidies" when the U.S. already hosts the largest commercial footprint — "serving the interest of cloud expansion, ad targeting, camera analytics, and government data processing," so the China narrative can "be a justification."
