Crypto Has Lost $3.63B Since January 2025
CoinGecko counted 245 incidents between January 2025 and July 2026, with the ten largest making up over 72.5% of everything stolen. Bybit alone is $1.44B - more than the next four combined.
Line the dates up and the target visibly shifts. Almost every 2025 entry is an exchange: Bybit, Phemex, Bitget, Nobitex, BTCTurk, CoinDCX, BigONE, SBI. Not one exchange appears in the 2026 half. Instead it's protocols and infrastructure - Drift and KelpDAO landed within seventeen days of each other in April, $577M between them.
And audits didn't help. 147 of the 245 incidents hit audited protocols, accounting for 88.44% of all capital drained. Only about 11% involved a flaw actually inside the audit scope - KelpDAO's was a bridge misconfiguration, not a contract bug.
