"Andrew wasn't an actor — he was my director of photography. He was Australian, and he came to New Zealand to shoot The Fellowship of the Ring. It became a real partnership. A director of photography is the person who arranges the lighting and camera work, and our collaboration was pretty intense. We had a lot of arguments. But being an only child, I eventually came to think of Andrew as a brother.

We went on to shoot King Kong together, and by then we had become a true creative partnership. We worked together film after film, and after The Hobbit he moved on to other projects.

He wasn't really old when he died. It was a terrible blow to me, losing Andrew from my life.

It wasn't a conscious decision, but after that I made a documentary, and then I worked on The Beatles: Get Back. I've found myself avoiding drama films, because I couldn't imagine making one with someone who wasn't Andrew. In a strange way, it changed the course of my career. In the last twelve years I haven't made a drama film. It's taken me a long time to get over it."
