🍟 Why are they called "French fries"?

Despite the name, French fries probably did NOT come from France, but from Belgium.

🔵Theory 1:
During World War I, American soldiers ate fried potatoes in Belgium. The Belgian soldiers spoke French, so the Americans called them "French fries."

🔴Theory 2:
The word French refers to the old cooking verb to french, meaning to cut food into long, thin strips. If that's true, "French fries" simply means thin-cut fried potatoes.
