⚖️ Illinois Crypto Tax Faces Lawsuit from Trade Groups

The Blockchain Association and Crypto Council for Innovation filed a complaint on Aug. 21 in Sangamon County Circuit Court against the Illinois Department of Revenue, challenging a first-in-the-nation 0.2% tax on digital asset trades, transfers, and storage.

The tax is set to take effect Jan. 1, 2027, and the two trade groups argue it could significantly burden crypto activity in the state once implemented.

Watch for further filings and rulings in Sangamon County Circuit Court as the case proceeds ahead of the tax's Jan. 1, 2027 effective date.
