🇷🇺 #RUSSIA: An alleged underground Karelian separatist militia known as the Northern Brotherhood (Pohjoinen Veljeskunta) has released a video declaring its willingness to launch an armed struggle for independence from Russia. Karelia is a historical region divided between Finland and northwestern Russia. Its indigenous Karelian population is closely related to the Finns, with its own language and cultural traditions (although the fighter in this video speaks Russian). Following wars between Finland and the Soviet Union, Finland surrendered large parts of Karelia to Moscow in 1940 and 1944. Today, the Russian Republic of Karelia remains under Moscow’s control. The so-called Northern Brotherhood wants to establish an independent Karelia, preserve what it describes as the region’s Nordic traditions, and fight back against Russian imperialism, which it calls “Neo-Bolshevism”. The group has connections to NORD, a Karelian volunteer military formation fighting alongside Ukraine against Russian forces. NORD advocates the eventual liberation of Karelia from Russian rule. This is not the Northern Brotherhood’s first militant declaration. In 2025, the group claimed responsibility for sabotage against Russian railway infrastructure, allegedly intended to disrupt military logistics. Independent confirmation of the operation remains limited. The militia’s actual size, weapons, and operational capabilities remain unknown. Many accuse it of being a LARP. Still, its latest declaration signals at least an ambition to transform Karelian separatism into an armed insurgency against Moscow. 677Nov 2
