Nine years ago today, October 4, 2017, a partnered patrol near Tongo Tongo, Niger, was ambushed by ISIS-affiliated fighters.
Four American soldiers were killed:
SFC Jeremiah W. Johnson
SSG Bryan C. Black
SSG Dustin M. Wright
SGT La David T. Johnson
The investigation that followed identified lessons in planning, intelligence, communication, support, and casualty evacuation.
But today is about the men.
They fought under overwhelming circumstances. They fought for each other. And each would ultimately be awarded the Silver Star for his actions that day.
These images aren’t from a movie. They capture the final fight of real men with families, friends, and teammates waiting for them at home.

More info, after denying unauthorized help by the command (in Chad) from the other U.S. units there , an hour later, French commandos launched a rescue mission and saved the rest of the Green Berets there.
