The Taliban is offering U.S. companies access to Afghanistan’s vast mineral resources as it seeks sanctions relief and the release of frozen assets.

Foreign Minister Amir Khan Muttaqi said Kabul would welcome U.S. investment in mining, infrastructure, agriculture and trade.

Afghanistan is estimated to hold more than $1 trillion in largely untapped minerals, including copper, lithium, cobalt and gold.

The outreach comes as the Taliban tries to end its diplomatic isolation despite criticism over severe restrictions on women and girls.

Trump has shown little interest in closer ties and has instead called for the return of Bagram air base, which the Taliban rejects.
