Description:
Concerning the questions of colonialism and race, Hegel's literal stance was arguably deeply troubling even by the standards of his own age. In the Philosophy of Right, he treats European colonial expansion as the natural and necessary outgrowth of free market economy, arguing that when a society's internal market can no longer absorb its overproduction and its growing class of the poor, it is driven outward to found colonies and seek new markets and consumers overseas (§§246–248). He presents this as a structural necessity of modern economic life, without any serious reckoning with exploitation that colonization inflicted on colonized peoples.
