Parnell, who also serves as one of Hegseth’s senior advisers, has privately expressed interest in the position and is on Hegseth’s shortlist.
Driscoll is considering leaving around the end of the year following a months-long influence struggle with Hegseth. He is also said to be open to resigning around Labor Day, although the White House wants him to remain in office at least until after the November midterm elections.
