ප්රවේණි විධානයන් ප්රෝටීන බවට පරිවර්තනය වන ක්රියාවලියේදී සිදුවන මූලික පියවර දෙක වන්නේ පිටපත් කිරීම (transcription) සහ පරිවර්තනය (translation) වේ. පිටපත් කිරීමේදී DNA අණුවක තොරතුරු mRNA අණුවකට පිටපත් කෙරේ. පරිවර්තනයේදී mRNA අණුවේ ඇති තොරතුරු රයිබසෝම මගින් කියවා ඇමයිනෝ අම්ල එකතු කර ප්රෝටීනයක් නිපදවයි. (The two main steps in the process of converting genetic instructions into proteins are transcription and translation. In transcription, the information in a DNA molecule is copied into an mRNA molecule. In translation, the information in the mRNA molecule is read by ribosomes to add amino acids and produce a protein.)
