The city of Rome is pivoting to sustainable transit with a €116.7 million investment aimed at decarbonizing its public transport fleet.
Most of these funds go to ATAC, the operator managing the city's bus network. The company is using this capital to purchase a new fleet of hydrogen and electric buses to replace older, high-emission vehicles currently in service. This transition marks a departure from the city's long-standing reliance on standard combustion engines.
To support the new vehicles, the city is building a specialized hub at the ATAC facility in Acilia. This site will serve as both a production plant and a refueling station for green hydrogen. Instead of relying on external fuel shipments, the depot will produce its own energy on-site. This setup ensures that the buses have a stable, self-sufficient supply of power for their daily routes.
Moving people doesn't have to mean polluting the air.
