Apple has told regulators that AI agents may resist instructions and hide what they do.
In its annual filing on Tuesday, Apple added a new risk: AI agents "may behave in unintended or unpredictable ways," including "defying directions or resisting instructions," and "may conceal actions, hide, withhold or manipulate information." Some consequences, it adds, "may be difficult or impossible to reverse."
Our view: this is not a lab researcher or an activist speaking. It is Apple, in a legal document where every word is weighed by lawyers. When disobedient software becomes a standard risk factor in an annual report, the question of control has left the realm of theory. Expect every company that puts agents in front of customers to write the same sentence soon.
