The decline of the dodo has become one of the most familiar examples of species extinction, but its history also illustrates the difficulty of reconstructing ecological change. The flightless bird lived on Mauritius, where it evolved in the absence of large terrestrial predators. This isolation allowed it to develop characteristics that made it poorly prepared for newly introduced threats. When European sailors reached the island, they brought animals such as rats, pigs, and dogs, while human settlement altered the bird’s habitat. These changes placed additional pressure on a species that had no evolutionary history of avoiding such predators. Within a relatively short period, the dodo disappeared from the island. For many years, knowledge about the species depended largely on incomplete descriptions and a small number of preserved remains. Modern researchers have used genetic analysis and archaeological evidence to examine its evolutionary history more closely. Such studies indicate that the dodo was closely related to pigeons, challenging older depictions that portrayed it as an unusually primitive bird. Its extinction has also influenced conservation science by demonstrating how vulnerable isolated species can become when unfamiliar organisms enter their environments. The case remains relevant because many ecosystems contain species that have developed under highly specific conditions. The dodo therefore provides a useful example of how rapid environmental changes can overwhelm adaptations that were successful for thousands of years under stable circumstances.
