Trees may appear to compete constantly for sunlight, water, and nutrients, yet forests also contain complex forms of cooperation. Beneath the soil, many trees are connected to fungi through structures called mycorrhizal networks. The fungi attach themselves to tree roots and extend far into the surrounding soil, greatly increasing the area from which roots can obtain minerals and water. In return, the fungi receive sugars produced by the trees through photosynthesis. These underground connections can also allow substances to move between plants. For instance, a tree with access to abundant sunlight may transfer some carbon to a shaded neighbor through the fungal network. Older trees may likewise contribute resources to younger plants growing beneath the forest canopy. Researchers have found that these interactions are influenced by environmental conditions, the species involved, and the structure of the fungal community. This does not mean that forests function as perfectly cooperative societies. Plants still compete, and fungal networks can connect some species more strongly than others. Nevertheless, the discovery of these underground relationships has changed how scientists understand forests. A forest is not simply a collection of separate trees; it is a living system in which organisms can exchange resources in ways that remain largely invisible above ground.
